Translation (English)
Pay attention to your spinning, girl!
Your mother always tells you,
Why do you wander without purpose?
Listen to the advice, silly girl!
Pay attention to your spinning, girl!
The spinning wheel was given to you for nothing.
You didn't pay anything for it.
You don't understand the effort it took to get it
Now that your work is so easy
Pay attention to your spinning, girl!
This wheel is made for you.
Hold back your urge to play a bit.
You won't grow any more.
Don't be foolish, girl!
Pay attention to your spinning, girl!
Your wheel is colorful;
Everyone envies it.
Use it while times are good;
Settle in your own home, girl!
Pay attention to your spinning, girl!
This wheel is very precious!
You're foolish, you don't know its value.
You're proud, you walk arrogantly,
Lost in vanity, wealth, and pride.
Pay attention to your spinning, girl!
I shout, I cry with raised arms:
Don't be careless at all!
Listen to me and understand!
No other craftsman will ever make such a wheel
Pay attention to your spinning, girl!
Though this is not entirely clear.
Why let such a wheel go to waste?
Why throw it on a pile of dust?
Since it came to you,
You never used it, silly girl!
Pay attention to your spinning, girl!
I advise this silly, senseless girl.
This foolish, strange, and crazy girl,
When misfortunes overtake this helpless one,
You will mourn in despair, girl!
Pay attention to your spinning, girl
You have always been poorly provided.
You never spun a roll with care.
Why do you now wander sad and dejected?
On whom do you pin your hopes, girl?
Pay attention to your spinning, girl!
You don't straighten your spindle;
Nor do you tighten the wheel-string
Why do you stop spinning again and again?
You're causing your own ruin, girl!
Pay attention to your spinning,
Straighten your bent spindle.
Quickly fix the wheel-string.
Get it working, somehow.
Don't be negligent, girl!
Pay attention to your spinning,
You have fresh cotton at home today.
You should quickly work the pin-rolls.
Take the rolled cotton to get it fluffed
Tomorrow you can't go there, girl!
Pay attention to your spinning,
When you return with fluffed cotton,
With friends you will spin cotton rolls.
You will be liked by everyone,
In the whole wide world, girl!
Pay attention to your spinning,
In your spinning party have all your friends.
They have spun their cotton rolls and finished their work.
You sit idly, they urge you to spin.
Why do you keep sitting, and look at them dazed?
Pay attention to your spinning,
Light the lamp nearby;
Spin the cotton, put it in the basket;
Stay awake all night,
And work tirelessly on your wheel, girl!
Focus on your spinning, girl!
Your stay in your parents' house is short.
Don't waste it all in play,
Don't remain idle, do some work.
Don't let your home go to ruin, girl!
Focus on your spinning, girl!
Don't sleep through the night;
You won't come here again,
And sit again in this spinning party,
With friends your age, girl!
Focus on your spinning, girl!
You won't stay in your parents' house forever;
Nor always sit beside your loving mother.
You'll endure the pain of separation one day,
And face your mother-in-law and sister-in-law, girl!
Focus on your spinning, girl!
Spin your yarn or get it spun.
Get your threads set in the warp.
Get your wedding clothes dyed.
Then you'll earn respect, girl!
Focus on your spinning, girl!
When you go to the house of strangers
You won't come back from there.
You'll feel regret on reaching there.
Prepare in advance, girl!
Focus on your spinning, girl!
You still have so much to do!
Why have you become so carefree?
What will you do at the last moment,
When the guest (angels of death) reach your house, girl?
Focus on your spinning, girl!
When all your friends have left,
They won't return from there at all (they won't return
to this world after death;
They won't set their wheels to spin.
Your spinning house will be deserted, girl!
Focus on your spinning, girl!
Don't be proud of your beauty and youth;
Tourists don't settle in a foreign land (this world is a foreign land for the soul).
Of this false, temporary world,
No name or trace will remain.
Focus on your spinning, girl!
Your testing time (the time of death) will surely come,
When all near and dear ones will leave you.
But, at that time the Sultan (master) of Bullah
Will help you to cross over:
Focus on your spinning, girl!

Detailed Explanation
The poem 'Kar Kattan Wal Dhiyan Kuray' by Bulleh Shah is a spiritual and philosophical piece that uses the metaphor of spinning to convey deeper life lessons. The repeated advice to focus on spinning symbolizes the importance of paying attention to one's spiritual duties and preparation for the afterlife. The spinning wheel represents the opportunities and responsibilities given to a person, which should not be wasted. The poem warns against pride, vanity, and negligence, urging the listener to be mindful of their actions and the transient nature of life. It emphasizes the inevitability of death and the importance of spiritual readiness, suggesting that worldly pleasures and distractions are temporary and ultimately unfulfilling. The poet uses the imagery of a girl and her spinning wheel to illustrate the broader human condition, encouraging introspection and a focus on what truly matters.
