Perennial Sands by Unknown — Analysis & Translation

Original Poem

Perennial Sands The days are long And years go slow Not much to learn No room to grow The time will heal But these wounds are all I feel Been spared to live The page won’t turn I'll always give And linger torn With all I’ve met Not one memory to forget And there's nothing to repent Morrow will come Here I'll remain Nothing will change Still I'll decay These mortal ghouls Torment my endless soul And I'm only as loud As the silence allows Please don´t force me to stay Make it all fade away Take me back to that time and place I can’t seem to endure this test To resume the bold warrior’s face Has withstood all my lastingness All the things that I've Seen and passed me by Have flown away like sand Felt the guilt of time No need to arrive Forever will I stay where I am By myself I’ll stand With this curse at hand While eternity lasts My perennial sands

Translation (English)

Perennial Sands The days feel long And years pass slowly There's not much to learn No space to grow Time will heal But I only feel these wounds I've been spared to live But the story won't continue I'll always give And remain torn With everyone I've met Not a single memory to forget And there's nothing to regret Tomorrow will come I'll stay here Nothing will change Yet I'll decay These mortal spirits Torment my endless soul And I'm only as loud As the silence lets me be Please don't make me stay Let it all disappear Take me back to that time and place I can't seem to endure this challenge To become the brave warrior again Who has endured all my endurance All the things I've Seen and have passed by me Have disappeared like sand Felt the guilt of time No need to arrive I will forever stay where I am By myself I'll stand With this curse in hand While eternity lasts My everlasting sands

Detailed Explanation

The poem 'Perennial Sands' explores themes of time, memory, and existential reflection. It begins by expressing a sense of stagnation, where days and years feel long and slow, with little to learn or grow from. The speaker feels trapped in a cycle of pain and memories, unable to move forward or forget the past. The notion of time healing wounds is contradicted by the persistent feeling of those wounds. The poem conveys a sense of resignation and acceptance of one's fate, as the speaker acknowledges the inevitability of decay and the torment of their soul. There is a longing for escape and a desire to return to a simpler, more courageous time. The imagery of sand suggests the fleeting nature of experiences and the passage of time. Ultimately, the poem reflects on the enduring nature of one's burdens and the struggle to find peace within oneself.
