“The Breath of Life” My throat feels dry as a desert, but it feels like I’m drowning. Just when I feel like I’m about to surface, when my chest anticipates the strong salty air and my face awaits the beating down of the sun that dries, it takes me by surprise. The reminder of the reality I try to escape everyday is that same pair of lungs that beg for a breath of air. I try to suppress the feeling when I know it will never go away. My mind desires for it to be lost within the confines of that bottomless pit, where nothing is tangible and real, but my body refuses to submit to the darkness of the currents that pull me in. The mind, the consciousness of my flesh, deceives me. It tells me what I want to hear, but that same, unconscious body of mine, keeps me tethered to the same reason I breathe. He(God) is the reason I breathe. I choose to breathe for Him. And my body reminds me of this every second I get that feeling, that urge to breathe, that same feeling that my mind wants to suppress. So, I kick. I fight for that freedom my body longs for every single day, though my legs burn and ache for rest. For Him.
